In the heart of Ghent's historic center, the Design Museum Gent was given a new, characterful wing. A complex construction site in a dense urban environment, where space is scarce and precision is crucial. Commissioned by the partners involved, C-SITE documented this special construction project for almost a year with a high-end time-lapse solution — from construction pit to facade, with the Ghent skyline as a silent witness.
For this time-lapse, the choice of camera position was essential. The solution? A camera on the roof across a narrow street. Only from that vantage point could we perfectly capture both the entire construction site and the gradual appearance of the new museum facade.
Working in a historic city center requires extra attention to safety, stability, and discretion. It is precisely this complexity that makes this project a textbook example of how thoughtful visual construction monitoring is also possible in an urban context.
Over the past few months, the time-lapse camera has taken no fewer than 78,000 photos. Each image documents a piece of progress: structural work, structure, detailing, and finishing. Together, they form a powerful visual story of transformation, collaboration, and craftsmanship.
These images are not only impressive to look at, but also form a valuable archive for:
Cultural construction projects such as this require more than just technical monitoring. They have a public dimension and tell a story—about heritage, contemporary architecture, and urban renewal. With time-lapse videos, C-SITE makes this evolution tangible and shareable for all stakeholders and the general public.
The combination of accurate image recording and a carefully chosen perspective results in content that is not only informative, but also emotionally engaging.
C-SITE is extremely proud to have been able to document this project, from the initial excavation work to the iconic final image. And now the countdown has begun: on October 3, 2026, the renovated Design Museum Gent will officially open its doors.
